|Twenty one surveyors from Whatcom, Skagit, Island, San Juan, Snohomish and King counties (plus one son and daughter) attended the birthday party to honor long time surveyor SAM CROSSMAN on Friday, December 30th, 2016 at the Farmhouse Restaurant. Sam made a short speech, lunch was served, a short Power Point of Sam’s life was shown, Sam was presented with an award (below) and then birthday cake.
A tearful Sam with his HONORARY SURVEYOR OF THE YEAR Award and Birthday cake. Sam said the birthday party and award “was the greatest honor I have ever received in my life”.
SAM WISHES TO EXPRESS HIS HEARTFELT THANKS TO THE NORTHWEST CHAPTER FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN.

I had the pleasure of attending my first BAUG meeting this evening. What a great group of individuals. It was fun watching them get together to share knowledge and experience. I may ask some of them for help with my homework! The next meeting will be September 28, so put it on your calendar now.

What? We get our own week! I hope you’re all basking in the glow of national recognition 🙂 Don’t forget to spread the word so people can join in the fun. The NSPS Young Surveyors’ Network is celebrating this week by challenging each other to participate in the push to get GPS on Bench Marks before the new vertical datum becomes a reality in 2022.
GPS on Bench Marks is an effort to add GPS coordinates to marks that make up the Nation’s height system, the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). These marks were part of historic geodetic leveling surveys, but they are often difficult and expensive to access. By adding GPS coordinates to these marks, NGS will improve future hybrid geoid models, and the information will also help create a tool to transform data between NAVD 88 and the new vertical datum. Visit the GPS on Bench Marks webpages to learn more.
And just for fun, here’s a rad historical photo:
I hope everyone who went to the annual conference this year had as much fun as I did. Kudos to our very own John Thalacker and Tom Brewster for taking on another year of leadership and responsibility on the Executive Committee.
This is an exciting time for surveying. People are saying we’re in a Renaissance, a Golden Age and that young surveyors are the key. I’m here at the 2nd Annual North America meeting of the Young Surveyors Network in chilly Minneapolis, Minnesota and I am witnessing firsthand the enthusiasm and momentum that young surveyors all over the country are bringing to the profession. I’m excited to bring this momentum back to my local chapter!
